Each image documents a point of time within a conceptual performance during which Barton played with clothing, color, and movement to explore memories, the unconscious, and habitual reactions. An iPhone 7 captured these moments of exploration and self-discovery. "Ruminating" reminds us of the importance of authentic transparency in an era where we pride ourselves in controlling others’ perceptions. We cannot silence a knowing. It sits within us. We may rarely call upon it. Happenstance sensory input draws knowing into consciousness. Sometimes, we notice it, and then push it away unwelcomed. When we are mindful, we can welcome it in, and make space for it with intention. Here, we might discover healing.
